#44206, "ADS spool?"

Hi. On both my 6500 Magg and Rocket I get more distance with the old style spool than with the new ADS spool. Anyone noticed same or it it just me?
BTW has anyone caught anything using the Berkeley Gulp sandworms? I keep trying them when I'm out of natural bait but not a single bite so far.

I've never used the newer spools so I can't help there. But I have used Gulp Sand Fleas several times and only caught shark on them. It's great inshore but I'm not impressed with it for the surf.

The ADS spool , is that the wiffle spool? Abu copied the Daiwa design they used on their high end Japanese Millionaires. The wiffle spool was designed to lighten the reel . Shimano did the same thing by Wiffling the side plates of their Calcuttas. Less weight, easier to cast for accuracy and maybe distance. I believe the wiffle spool will also add to less backlash being a lighter spool ( Mag effect). You may need to change out or remove the little brake pads .

Berkley Sandworms,

We use the camo and blood sandworm extensively here on the Southern California West Coast. They are killer on barred surf perch and an occasional corbina or halibut.

We normally split the 6" worm into thirds and slide them onto a #6, or so, mosquito hook.

The sand fleas have been a flop here in SoCal. They can't give those away.

The 2" swimming mullet is also good bait for us. Just about any surf species will also eat this one.

Simply said, Berkley Gulp outfishes any other artificial bait I have ever tried.

With that said, right now, the live sand crab or sand flea, as you'all call it, is king of baits. We use the .5"-.75" models. In a pinch we thread two or even three small crabs on the hook. The fish don't seem to mind. I think its those moving legs they key in on.

Manuel

Hey Manuel,

I actually know what two of those fish are! Gulps are fairly famous around here too, but for me, only when I run out of fresh bait.
I was an idiot. I lived in southern Cal for three years (right on the beach!) and never picked up a fishing pole, which, as I said, is stupid. I have no excuse...

Fish, fish, fish, sleep. Repeat.
